Assessing the Prevalence and Awareness of Acne Vulgaris among Syrian University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Acne is an epidemic inflammatory disease associated with the human pilosebaceous glands with follicular hyper-keratinization and colonization of Propionibacterium. This study aims to assess the prevalence, identify the risk factors, and awareness of acne among university students studying in Damascus, Syria. A cross-sectional study was conducted at three major universities in Damascus, Damascus University, Syrian Private University, and Al-Sham Private University in March of 2022. All students who consented to participate from the universities mentioned above were included in the study. Data were collected through online-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social sciences version 25.0. Of the 769 students, 342 (44.8%) were Syrian Private University students, 210 (27.5%) were Damascus University students, 129 (16.5%), and 83 (10.9%) were from other universities.
